Character Background

• History: Here!
• Core Relationships:
Thancred:
Ryne’s relationship with Thancred did not start off well but left on a very good note.
He’s the one who saved her from her imprisonment in Eulmore, and from there, he taught her how to fight and survive out in the world. He kept her at arm’s length for most of their time together, though, because of his own pain involving the original Minfilia. While Ryne desperately wanted to be accepted by him, especially as her own person, she didn’t know how to properly express herself or stand up to him.
As their journey progresses, though, they become closer especially as Ryne finally accepts herself as her own person and proves her own both to him and herself. Thancred is the one who gave her the name Ryne, fae for blessed, and while she never calls him father, she very much views him as her true guardian. When it’s time for Thancred to return to his own world, they are both sad, but both agree they’ll be okay. They have the support they need even if they aren’t together, and they’ll always care for each other even worlds apart.

Gaia:
Ryne and Gaia met during her investigation of the first Sin Eater, and even though she was an enemy at first from being possessed, the two of them actually became very fast friends. It wasn’t easy at first because they are such different personalities, but Ryne was determined to befriend her because Gaia was alone just as Ryne was before meeting the Scions. It’s because of Gaia too that Thancred felt okay to leave Ryne behind, knowing she wouldn’t be alone and was in good hands. Their friendship is Ryne’s strongest relationship since Thancred left, maybe ever. Even when an attempt was made to wipe Ryne from Gaia’s memories, Ryne was able to save her and help her remember all their precious moments together. The two girls are simply inseparable now, living happy lives together.

Minfilia & Hydaelyn:
Ryne’s relationship with Minfilia and the Goddess Hydaelyn goes hand in hand. Minfilia was the voice for the weakening Goddess, and she came to Ryne’s world to stop it from ending at the cost of her own life. However she didn’t truly die, instead reincarnating into young girls born of this dying world for over 100 years.
Ryne had always had a faint connection to Hydaelyn because of the Goddess’s weakened powers, but her connection to Minfilia was strong even if they had never met. However, she was very torn on letting Minfilia take over her or standing as her own person instead. But after finally being able to speak Minfilia herself, she finally resolves to stand on her own. Minfilia is pleased with her choice, passing on her blessing and finally being able to rest.
Ryne is forever grateful for being given the chance to be herself but also carries Minfilia’s ambitions close to her heart and sees them through.

Ran’jit:
Ran’jit has a very long, complicated history with the Oracle of Light. For many years, he would train the oracles when they were reborn after dying and fight alongside them, but over time, it really began to wear him down seeing the girls he raised die. Once Eulmore began to change in favor of basically accepting the end of the world and living comfortably in it, he went along with it, but he never stopped fighting on his own. When Ryne was discovered as the next Oracle of Light, however, instead of letting her fight too, he decided to lock her up against her will instead. While he was supposed to be her guardian, he was cold and distant to her, afraid to become close to another Oracle for her to simply die again. That isn’t to say he didn’t care about her, but because of how he treated her, Ryne did not have any good feelings toward him, seeing him as an abuser instead after treating her so poorly. She didn’t want to be around him, and she had little to say about his death.

The Scions:
While Thancred was the Scion Ryne connected to the most, the other Scions were very important to her too. She saw them all as friends, even family. She was slightly closer to the elf Urianger, who served as mentor to her, and she expressed wanting to befriend more people her age like the twins. Unfortunately she never really had the chance to get closer to them since their time was short in her world, but she still cares deeply for all the Scions.

The Warrior of Darkness: The WoD is the player character, who serves as a guide for Ryne through her journey. Although the time they spend together is short, they go through a lot, and Ryne really admires the WoD. They make her want to be a better, stronger person because of their own strength. The expectations on them are very heavy, and Ryne tries to mimic their determination to meet her own too. She doesn’t want to be protected by the Warrior of Darkness; she wants to be seen as their equal. In a lot of ways, she manages to do that, but she’ll always be a little bit like a daughter to them.

Character Personality Through Key Moments

(2+) Positive Experiences:
Becoming Ryne:
When Ryne was born, her identity was taken away from her almost instantly when she was recognized as the newest Oracle of Light. That came with the name Minfilia too, and for most of her life, that was how she was forced to live while also being a prisoner. She didn’t know how to be herself or who her true self really was because she was never allowed that freedom.

Once she met Thancred, though, it started to become easier. It was not an instant fix, and over time, Ryne would often seek the help and opinions of others on how she should live her life. Or possibly give up her life and let the original Minfilia take over her. Her own self doubting would often be her largest hurdle, and while it seemed like she wanted someone to make the choice for her, Ryne realized she’d have to do that on her own.

It’s when she’s able to stand up to her abuser Ran’jit that Ryne truly finds her strength. She’s able to be strong against him, and it helps solidify for her that she wants to be her own person. So when she’s able to speak with the original Minfilia about what she wants to do, she’s able to confidently say she wants to be herself, and while she promises to carry on Minfilia’s dream, she wants to do it on her own terms. She’s still carrying a heavy burden, but she feels this is a life worth living because it's her own now.

Her name is then changed to Ryne and its meaning is perfect for her: blessed. Blessed by people who finally love her for her, blessed by being allowed to be herself despite everything, blessed with the promise of a better world and future at last.

Befriending Gaia:
Not long after saving her world, Ryne strived to do more than just that. She wanted to fix her world and make it better for the future generations. This starts with trying to restore the dead land that was ruined in the apocalypse, and using the first Sin Eater named Eden to do so. As a result, a young woman with no memories named Gaia was drawn to Eden, first possessed by an unknown force, but after defeating her in battle, she turned to their side.

Ryne and Gaia could not be more opposite: while Ryne is friendly, soft spoken, and sometimes naive, Gaia can be cold, seemingly uncaring, and not afraid to speak her mind even when she maybe shouldn’t. Despite that, though, Ryne desperately wants to befriend her because she sees a lot of her past self in Gaia. She was so alone for so long because of Eulmore, and she doesn’t want Gaia to feel alone like. After many trials and tribulations, the two girls managed to become true friends and care about each other, and Ryne is so happy to have a friend.

It wasn’t all happy moments, though. Gaia manages to remember her past because of an Ascian, the enemy Ryne and Scions have been fighting, and she remembers that she too is an Ascian. But that doesn’t stop Ryne from wanting to be her friend. She’s loyal to Gaia and wants them both to have a happy future together, which she finds worth fighting until the end for. Gaia is grateful to her and wants the same too.

But the Ascian who wants Gaia back can’t stand it, and he wipes Gaia’s new memories. This breaks Ryne’s heart, but despite it, she doesn’t give up. She’s determined to save Gaia because of how important she is to her now, and through believing in her friend, she manages to do so while Gaia is lost.

With Gaia’s memories back, the two look forward to the future and agree not to dwell in their pasts so long as they have each other. There is hope in their hearts for whatever may come their way next because they’ll have each other.

(2+) Negative Experiences:
Living in Eulmore/Reincarnation:
At a very young age, Ryne was stolen from her family once she was recognized as the new Oracle of Light. Whatever life she had before that is long since forgotten since she was so young at the time, such as her original name and her family. And her new life as Minfilia, the Oracle of Light, began in the walls of Eulmore. Unfortunately, it was not a good life for her.

Ryne was treated as a prisoner, locked down in the dungeons rather than living amongst the people. She was purposely made to be sheltered and helpless instead of usual training the Oracle would receive. She was often talked down to and called terrible things by her guardian Ran’jit in order to make her believe she belonged where she did. She was also purposely kept ignorant on everything related to being the Oracle in hopes she’d never be able to tap into her true potential and gifts along with the outside world. The lead to Ryne becoming very self loathing, seeing herself as a burden and sometimes even better off dead. There’s clear trauma there as a result of it too, manifesting as her darkest fear while facing an Ascian.

This all changed when Thancred stole her away from Eulmore. He began to train her how to fight and survive in the world, turning her into a survivalist and also a capable young woman. However, he also wouldn’t tell her much at all about the original Minfilia and would often keep her at arm’s length because of his own trauma. So while she began to become stronger physically, all it did was to fuel her self hatred and self doubt.

Over time, it’s become easier for her as she learns to love herself and allows others to become closer to her. But sometimes those self-loathing, sheltered traits do come through still. She’s learning a lot about the world now and a lot about herself on that journey, too. She’s come a long way since her childhood, but she still has some ways to go.

Saying Goodbye:
Eventually, the Scions need to return to their own world as they cannot survive in Ryne’s world much longer. It’s something she knew was going to have to happen one day, but it’s a very bittersweet moment for her. She’s sad because she loves them, but she knows they must go home. Instead of dwelling in her sadness, she tries to enjoy the rest of the short time they have together meaningfully.

Her and Thancred visit Minfilia’s resting place, and she does this more so for him than herself. She knows he needs this before he leaves because she cares about him and Minfilia. That’s a way she can express her gratitude to them both, too, while also reminding herself of the promises she made.

When it comes to their final goodbye, Ryne tries very hard to be mature about what she says, attempting to reassure the Scions that both she and her world will be okay. They are stronger thanks to the Scions, but now the people of this world will look out for each other in their absence. She says this with a smile, but when Thancred praises her for how much she’s grown as a person, she breaks down, showing she still emotional no matter how much of a front she can manage to put on.

However no matter how difficult it may be to say goodbye, Ryne has proven she can be independent. She can also stand on her own feet now if she needs to, but thankfully she doesn’t always have to even without the Scions.

Deer Country Attributes

• Canon Powers:
The Power of Light: The Oracle of Light doesn’t just come in title alone. She has unique powers based in Light from her gifts. She is able to see the light in people’s auras, down to a biological make up, and she can also adjust the light in a person, using it usually to restore a balance when there’s too much light. She was strong enough to take control of the first Sin Eater called Eden, a creature made purely of light, for some time, and use it in order to restore the elements to a dead land. It should be noted she’s also very close to the element of ice as it’s the closest element to light, but she does not have any ice powers.

The Echo: This is a gift from Hydaelyn, which is a mere sliver of the power of the Ancients (the beings that came before them) after seeing falling stars. Those with the Echo can hear the voice of Hydaelyn, though that has become fainter over time with her weakening powers. The main power of the Echo usually lets the user have flashbacks of other people's lives or even just of a general area of an event, but this is typically beyond the user’s control. They can also understand any language even if they have never seen it before.
Those who have the Echo seem to be able to take on the powers of Gods called Primals, serving as a vessel. However, it’s important to note it’s not the actual Primal that’s being summoned through the user but rather an idea of them. That form can dramatically change from user to user based on how that person views that Primal. This can be seen in Ysayle’s version of Shiva and Ryne’s version of Shiva. It’s important to note this cannot be done whenever; it takes a lot of Aether (magic) and prayer.
The Echo also can have very unique abilities that vary from person to person. Ryne’s seems to be from her being the Oracle of Light (listed above).

Limit Break: What was once a game mechanic is now a canon power with a name as of Endwalker. Dynamis is an invisible energy much like Aether, but it’s power comes from emotions. They can be positive or negative, but they must be strong. This power can be used to Limit Break, which much like it says, pushes its user beyond their normal limits. Ryne’s comes in the form of a single target attack that can cause serious damage on the receiving end. Because it’s typically a shared power, she usually lets someone else use it first, though.

Rogue Training: Although Ryne’s official job title is The Oracle of Light, her training is based on Thancred’s rogue days. Her fighting style is based on those moves, and she can do special moves that make herself invisible, find an enemy’s weak point, and allow for easy dodging.
• Blood Type: Paleblood
• Omen: A Sin Eater from her homeworld called Forgiven Reticence shrunk down to the size of a house cat on a normal day; can grow to full size when needed.
• Blessed Day: 12/07
• Patron Pthumerian: Dorothea
• Blood Power Manifestation: I really want to put an emphasis on Ryne’s title of Oracle with the Echo mixing with her paleblood. So she’ll be receiving visions of both the past and future with more control than the Echo may normally allow, but she’ll have to bleed to do it. Whoever she’s having a vision of, past or future, she will also feel everything they are feeling in that moment, for better or for worse. If any of that is not okay though please let me know!
